Nestled between Vancouver Island and the Broughton Archipelago on the unceded Kwakwakw'akw Territory of the 'Namgis, Mamalilikala, and Kwakuitl Nations, lies sunny Sointula on Malcolm Island. Founded in 1901 by a group of visionary socialist Finns, cooperation and community have been the heart of Malcolm Island since the beginning. This is the land of Sisu- resilience, determination, and fortitude. Eagles soar, whales breach and wild salmon are king. It is a place where chainsaws and kayaks coexist. Visiting Malcolm Island, one begins to sense the intrinsic connection to ocean and land. It is place where time takes on new meaning and quiet reflection can be found on the miles of secluded beaches. Slow paced life and long chats in the street are the way of the day. It is a place that captures your heart.
Covid-19 has provided the opportunity for Malcolm Island to rally and take care of each other. We have gone to incredible lengths to ensure everyone in community has been cared for and supported. It is now time to support all our local businesses, community groups and artists to guarantee they can weather this pandemic storm. With our Sisu in place and the support of peoples whose hearts have been nurtured by this place, Malcolm Island will make a comeback.
